Athletic Field Products

Specialized needs, advanced products

A solid playing field makes all the differenceAthletic fields pose some of the biggest challenges for landscapers. Rough use and heavy drainage requirements require a precisely blended soil mix to withstand the abuse and foster turf growth.

Cedar Hill's root zone mix is a perfect blend of sand and peat moss, developed to meet the exacting specifications of designers of natural turf athletic fields. It drains water quickly into the field's trenches and helps ensure that the phrase, "it's a rain out," is rarely uttered.

For baseball diamonds, combinations of sand, silt and clay provide the necessary firmness. We recommend a mix with a higher clay concentration for the pitcher's mound, and often the batter's box and catcher's box, for extra stability. For the rest of the infield, an ideal mix is 50-75% sand and 25-50% clay and silt. Too much sand causes unstable footing; too much silt and clay leads to excess compaction and field hardness.

Which mix is best for my application? Cedar Hill works directly with athletic field designers to ensure the right products for the job. Synthetic turfs - popular for the multi-use soccer, football and lacrosse fields - require special sub-materials. Our experts evaluate the site and recommend a mix based on how the field will be used. For natural turfs, we blend a root zone mix that will help the turf withstand abuse.
